Releasing the River of Pride

You have been feeling the weight of a promise that never arrived. It sits in the back of your mind while you check messages, while you try to balance the rent and the school fees. The passage you are holding speaks of a nation that thought its strength came from its river, its chariots, its idols. It mirrors the way you sometimes measure yourself by the approval you seek, by the job you think you deserve, by the status you think will secure your family. The text does not shy away from the bitterness that follows when those sources dry up.

In Ezekiel 29 the prophet announces that the river which gave Egypt its fame will become a dry channel, that the thrones of the princes will be shattered, that the people will eat their own flesh. A careful eye catches the repeated use of the word “Noph” before the name “Egypt” appears, a literary move that shows the shift from a city to an entire nation, from a proud centre to a desolate whole. The casual reader may only hear the pronouncement of judgment, but the deeper pattern is a warning against relying on any single source of security. The same language returns in chapter 30, where the sword of the Lord is described as a flood that will sweep away the false idols, and in chapter 31 the pride of Assyria is compared to the fallen cedar of Lebanon, a picture that only a patient reader lets settle in the mind.

This week you are invited to look at the river in your own life, the thing you have built your identity around, and ask whether it still flows with purpose. If the current has slowed, do not cling to the idea that it will revive on its own. Instead, let the emptiness remind you that God can fill a hollow place with a new kind of water, one that does not depend on past glory. As you move through meetings, traffic, or quiet moments, notice where pride still whispers and where a gentle surrender can begin.
